How do I start the Retail Management Certificate program?

When are courses offered?
All certificate courses are offered on evenings and weekends.
Is Financial Aid available?
No, the federal government requires that a student be in their first degree-granting program to receive financial aid, and a certificate is not considered a degree program.
How long does it take to complete this certificate program?
The Retail Management Certificate is completed in 1 year (Fall, Spring and Summer terms). Courses must be taken when offered.
Should I do a degree program or a certificate program?
A certificate is not a substitute for a degree program, it is an additional credential that demonstrates expertise in a given field. However, some students may do a certificate program instead of a degree, depending on their personal goals and interests.
How much will this certificate cost?
Based on Fall 2013 rates, tuition for the five courses comprising this certificate will be $3,404 for residents of New York State or $9,290 for out-of-state students. Books, materials, and student fees are estimated to cost $679.

Your cost may vary for several reasons, such as your decision to take additional courses outside the certificate program, a fee for late registration, a change in the FIT tuition schedule, or the consequences of not completing the certificate in one year and enrolling for an additional semester.
As an option, you may choose to take one or both of the following certification examinations. The fee for the MOS Excel Certification Exam is $81. The fee for the National Retail Federation Retail Management Certification Exam is $80.
To round out your planning and budgeting, include transportation costs and estimate your personal expenses.
Students in the certificate program are not eligible for financial aid from FIT or through FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Do I need prior experience in the area before taking the certificate program?
One of the following are required for admission into the Retail Management Certificate Program:
- An official college transcript confirming completion of a baccalaureate degree in an area other than Fashion Merchandising, or
- Current resume and statement on company letterhead from your employer confirming 5+ years of full-time work experience in retail at the Assistant Manager level or higher.
What is the curriculum or the course descriptions?

Is a portfolio required to start the program?
Can I get a student visa by doing a certificate program? Do I need a visa?
To study credit courses in the United States, a student must have a visa that allows credit study, which does not include tourist visas. However, FIT is only able to assist a student in obtaining a visa if they apply and are accepted to a degree program. Certificate programs are not degree programs.
