Designer, Heather Huey
When did you first realize your passion/talent for this line of work?
After college I took a brief hiatus to reevaluate my life. Being an avid collector of vintage hats, it was my sister who recommended that I take a millinery class at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Did you have a set plan for reaching your goals?
The only clear goal I had was to become a working milliner in New York City.
Why did you choose FIT?
My sister was already in the 4-year program for fashion design and had heard about the millinery program.
What were your favorite classes at FIT?
The independent study class for millinery that Professor Janet Linville runs.
What was the pivotal moment of success in your career?
Fashion can be a very discouraging industry. During the first few years since starting my label I made the most of every little triumph; but it was my first major editorial [in W magazine] that signified a new level of success and acknowledgment of my work.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
What is your most treasured possession?
What is a little-known fact about you?
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from Fordham University.
What was the best advice you received that you’d like to share with peers and current students?
If you believe in what you're creating, don't give anyone the power to diminish it.
What is your motto?
When it's right, you'll know.
