Lilly Daché box, MFIT collection, 2011.
A special Couture Council viewing of work by Lilly Daché in the collection of The Museum at FIT was held in honor of the designer's birthday on October 13, 2011.
Lilly Daché was the foremost hat designer in the United States from the 1930s to the 1960s. A French born milliner, Lilly Daché arrived in America with nothing but thirteen dollars in her pocket, and founded a veritable fashion empire. In an era when no respectable woman would be seen in public without a hat, Lilly Daché reigned over both the art and the business of millinery. The legions of women who wore her creations ranged from stars to stenographers.
