SOLID SHOWING FOR SWIM TEAM AT NORTHEAST DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Fashion Institute of Technology Swimming Team completed a solid performance at the Northeast District Swimming and Diving Championships at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. Led by co-captains Kate Maldjian (Manasquan, NJ) and Mackenzie Jameson (Middle Village, NY), the women’s team finished 3rd overall out of 10 teams. The women’s team also won the Donna Mooney Memorial Award for most improved team, scoring 235 points. The FIT men, led by captain Alan Lopez (Princeton, NJ), finished 6th out of 11 teams. This season saw the largest men’s team that FIT has fielded at this meet. The men scored 119 points.
(The Northeast District is comprised of swim teams from NJCAA Region 3 and Region 15. Among Region 15 teams – Suffolk, Queensboro, Manhattan, and FIT – the FIT women finished first, and the FIT men finished second.)
Highlights for the women’s team included over 20 swims in finals or consolation finals. Freshman Jacki Kicksee (Toronto, ON) led the team as the event winner of the 200 Freestyle with a team-record time of 2:04.06. Kicksee also finished fourth in both the 500 Freestyle and 1650 freestyle, breaking her own record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:40.02. Co-captain Kate Maldjian was a finalist in the 50 Freestyle (4th), 100 Freestyle (4th) and 200 Freestyle (6th). Freshman Lauren Lyons finished 5th in the 100 Butterfly in addition to being a consolation finalist in the 200 Individual Medley and 200 Backstroke. Other consolation finalists for the women included co-captain Mackenzie Jameson in the 50 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle, freshman Ivana Ng (Flushing, NY) in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, and freshman Sara Trapani (Bayside, NY) in the 100 and 200 Freestyle.
The FIT men had over 10 swims in finals or consolation finals. Shachar Keizman (Kibbutz Nir Itzhack, Israel) led the team as the first place finisher in the 200 Breaststroke. Keizman also finished 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke and 6th in the 100 Fly. Freshman David Burkel (Sterling, VA) finished fifth in the 200 Breast, and was a top-twelve finisher in the 200 Individual Medley (8th) and the 100 Breast (10th). Freshman Matt Rodney (Levittown, NY) also finished 12th in the 200 Freestyle. Rounding out the men’s team were sophomores Kevin Buitrago (Easthampton, NY) and Alan Lopez. This was the first year that FIT has been able to field relays at the NE District meet. Out of four relays, two finished in the top six overall (800 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay).
The team will be competing one more time at Ocean County College before traveling to the NJCAA National Championships in Ft. Pierce, Florida on March 6-10, 2012.
