Anne Kong, assistant professor and past chairperson of the Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design (VPED) program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), is one of nine 2012 Retail Design Influencers chosen by readers of DDI (Display and Design Ideas) magazine for its annual Portfolio Awards.

Each year, DDI readers select the best, brightest, and most innovative people, projects, and designs in the retail design industry to receive the magazine’s Portfolio Awards. In addition to the Retail Design Influencers, categories include Retail Design Luminaries, Design Firms of the Year, Best Visual Merchandising Programs, Retailer of the Year, Best-Designed Stores of the Year, and Retail Standouts. The winners were featured in the magazine’s September issue.

Anne Kong graduated from FIT with an associate degree in Display and Exhibition Design and received her bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from SUNY Empire State. She became a full-time FIT faculty member in 1997.  Along with teaching in the VPED associate degree program, Kong teaches design for retail and visual presentation to students in the Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing BFA program and the Packaging Design BFA program.

Kong is a partner of creative services in A+D Kong, with more than 20 years of experience in developing design concepts and solutions for retail, showrooms, trade shows, and promotional events. Her work has been recognized by the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and she has developed programs and lectures in participation with the Smithsonian Institution.

Kong is an advisory member for Retail Design International magazine and serves on the Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) Committee, where she is responsible for organizing the Annual PAVE Gala Student Exhibition.

FIT’s Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design degree program, the first and only one of its kind in the country, offers a two-year program leading to an AAS degree. Students collaborate on projects with industry partners such as Sony, Macy’s, Target, and Vespa. They have created proposals for exhibitions at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the New-York Historical Society, and many other nonprofit organizations and corporations.
