First place winner Tiffany Spagnuolo from Hawthorne, NY, received a $5,000 scholarship for her “Dark Bloom” design. Second place winner Tessa Saccone from Massapequa Park, NY, won a $4,000 scholarship for “Moonlit Azaleas,” and third place winner Sara Shanahan from Atlanta, GA, won a $3,000 scholarship for “Nocturnal Blossom.”
The three other finalists – Alina Kulik, Judy Yang, and Erin Brennan, who created “Wilting Dream,” “Midnight Petals,” and “Fleur de Reve” respectively – each received $1,000.
The scholarships were underwritten by Penn Asia Company Limited, Stretchline Holdings Ltd., and Regina Miracle International Ltd. More than 700 industry executives, media, and celebrities attended the gala, which was hosted by celebrity spokesperson Carson Kressley. Recognized as a premier event in the intimate apparel industry, the annual gala is the fundraising vehicle that enables The Underfashion Club to support its scholarship, awards, internship, and grants programs.
The Fashion Design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) was established in 1944, the year the college was founded. The associate degree program provides students with an essential foundation for creating apparel from sketch to finished garment. In the baccalaureate program, students receive advanced instruction in specialized areas. The program’s close ties to the fashion design industry provide an immersion in current trends and practices. As part of their course of study, students intern with leading designers and design houses, and also have the opportunity to study abroad, in particular at one of FIT’s programs in Florence and Milan.
