FIT President and MFIT Director Selected as New York City “Makers”

Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT), have been selected by WNET-TV/Channel Thirteen as New York City “Makers”—women and men who help “make” New York. Both are currently profiled on the network’s website at http://www.thirteen.org/share-your-story/women/, revealing the women who have inspired them. Their personal accounts are in conjunction with the PBS documentary Makers: Women Who Made America, which recounts how women have transformed the nation over the past 50 years.

Dr. Brown chose civil rights activist Rosa Parks as her personal inspiration, noting that Parks’ quiet inner strength challenged people to trust their own convictions and persevere in the face of opposition. Dr. Brown is the first woman president of FIT. Dr. Steele said that fashion pioneer Diana Vreeland paved the way for future curators like herself to freely blend beauty and intelligence into an exhibition.
