(New York, NY) There was much excitement in the FIT gymnasium Wednesday night as the FIT Tigers Volleyball Team defeated Dutchess Community College in the opening round of Region 15 playoffs to advance to the semifinals (25-15, 25-12, 25-14). Setter Anna Buckley also recorded her 1000th set assist for the 2013 season.
“It was such an exciting night. It’s the start of playoff season so everyone starts with a clean slate. Everyone always has some playoff jitters at the beginning so it was great to get such a big win tonight. Going in as the #1 seed you know that everyone is gunning for you. The girls stepped up and turned on their playoff mode. I’m proud of the way these girls are playing. Each match we will continue to turn on the intensity. This team has worked so hard this year and deserves everything that comes to them.”
Anna Buckley notched her 1000th season set assist on a big kill by Megan Houff. “Anna needed 17 assists at the start of the match to reach this milestone. She knew she was close but I told her to just focus and go out on the court and do what she does best. She did just that-- not once forcing the ball to just get the assist. This has been a total team effort. Anna is an amazing athlete but she knows without all of her hitters this feat would not have been possible. She is a hard worker as are all of the players on this team.”
The Tigers were led offensively by Anna Buckley with 33 set assists. Megan Houff banged out 13 kills while Rachel Carey added 9 kills. Vivian Htam and Michelle Vainblat chipped in with 5 kills apiece. Alison Tyler played stellar defense racking up 23 digs. Miranda Mitchell recorded 4 kills.
The FIT Tigers will now advance to the Region 15 semifinals in Orange County on Saturday to take on the #5 seed Orange County College.
