Entrance and Exit Loan Counseling

Entrance Counseling

Direct Stafford Loans: All students taking out a Direct Subsidized Loan or Direct Unsubsidized Loan for the first time at the Fashion Institute of Technology must complete an Entrance Counseling Session before their loan funds can be disbursed.  We highly recommend students attend an "in-person" session held during orientation week or one of the several sessions held at the beginning of each semester, a list of those Direct Stafford Loan Counseling Sessions is list on our website.  If you were unable to attend any of these sessions the counseling can also be completed online at StudentLoans.gov.  For more information you can go to our webpage Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program.  All new Direct Stafford Loans require that you also complete a Direct Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN), which you may complete online at StudentLoans.gov.

Perkins Loans:  All students who are first-time Federal Perkins Loan borrowers are required to complete a Perkins Master Promissory Note (MPN) and an Entrance Counseling Session for Perkins Loan through the Bursar's Office.

Graduate PLUS Loan:  If this is your first Graduate PLUS Loan, you must complete an Entrance Counseling Session for a PLUS loan and a Graduate PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN) at StudentLoans.gov - even if you have previously completed one for a Direct Stafford Loan.

Exit Counseling

Exit Counseling is required when you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment. At FIT you must be enrolled in at least 6 credits in your degree program to be considered half-time for Direct Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans.

Direct Stafford Loans: Financial Aid Services will provide "in-person" Direct  Stafford Loan Counseling Sessions during the final weeks of each semester.  We highly recommend you contact Financial Aid Services at DL@fitnyc.edu or call us at (212) 217-3560 and inform us which session you would like to attend so that we can prepare a personalized folder for you.  If you are unable to attend one of these sessions you can also complete an Exit counseling session online at StudentLoans.gov.

Perkins Loan:  Exit counseling sessions are completed through the Bursar's Office.

Graduate PLUS Loans: Exit counseling sessions can be completed online at StudentLoans.gov.
