FIT Track and Field Lions Invitational – College of New Jersey
by Maria Paolillo
(Ewing, NJ) It was a tough day of competition for the Lady Tigers, but they most certainly brought their A game to the College of New Jersey’s Lions Invitational. The conditions were perfect for setting personal bests and tuning up before the National meet in two weeks.
Shannen Gallardo had a break out race in the 1500-meter run finishing 2nd in her heat with a time of 5:35 to place 2nd. Hannah Duncan, Shannon McIver, and Kelsey Waters also competed in the 1500-meter run. Duncan toughed out a 5:45 to place 13th in her heat. McIver took home most improved of the day, as she crushed her previous record of 6:01 with a time of 5:49 to place 2nd in her heat. Waters made a mark of 6:11 to place 10th in her heat.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Sidnee Compere showed up by placing 2nd in her heat to take 21st overall in a time of 17.25. This was only a sliver off of her personal best of 16.99. Compere is definitely getting fine tuned for Nationals.
Shayna Fairclough competed in the 400 meter dash placing 7th in her heat with a time of 1:05.32. This time was good for 23rd overall and only 2 seconds off of her personal best of 1:03.
Gallardo, Duncan, and McIver doubled this week and also ran the 800 meter run. Duncan came in leading the Lady Tigers with a time of 2:40, placing 5th in her heat. McIver was next with a time of 2:46, good for 9th in her heat. Gallardo finished 3rd in her heat with a time of 2:52.
The Tigers are only two weeks out from the most important meet of their season. The fire could be seen in their eyes this weekend as the date rapidly approaches. Stay tuned to hear how FIT does next weekend in their last meet before the big day in a meet a little closer to home in Queens, NY.
