Educational Skills

Read, write, speak, and research better—and make the most of your FIT education.

College students are expected to develop a skill set that reflects their engagement with higher education. The ability able to read efficiently, write effectively, speak fluently and research methodically will help you make the most of your college courses—but that’s not all. These skills are also essential to a successful career and a well-rounded, intellectually rewarding life.

Whether English is your first language or your fifth, Educational Skills courses help you to develop the habits of study, and the habits of mind, that will enable you to succeed during and after college.

Our courses are designed for entry-level students as well as those who need assistance in such areas as:

  • drafting, editing and revising
  • grammar and punctuation
  • researching and summarizing
  • thesis and support
  • English as a second language (including pronunciation, oral presentation skills, and conversation)

In collaboration with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Educational Skills Department offers two non-credit ESL programs:

The Education Skills Department operates two academic centers:

  • The Academic Skills Center offers tutoring in almost every course at FIT. Small-group sessions are free to FIT students. Walk-in services are also available.
  • The Testing Center administers placement tests in English, arithmetic, and algebra.

In collaboration with FIT-ABLE, the department also provides a range of services for students with documented learning disabilities.
