Apply for Summer/Winter Abroad

Eligibility: All summer and winter abroad courses require the approval of the course instructor.  See course descriptions for prerequisites. 

Application Instructions: Carefully read and follow the instructions below.  You are responsible for following up on all required payments and documentation. 

Complete the Online Application

Applications are accepted only when the “Apply Now” link appears in the course description.

Log in using your FIT username and password.  Select "Search Programs" to locate and apply to the program you are interested in.  Non-FIT students must register in order to create a username and password before logging in. 

NOTE: Only complete applications will be reviewed.   Please be aware of the following requirements.
Required Documents  
  • DARS or Transcript
    You will also need to submit the printer-friedly version of your current degree audit (DARS).  Please save your DARS as a pdf, txt or word document before uploading it.  Non-FIT students must submit a transcript in .pdf form.  Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
  • Additional materials as required will be noted in the program description.

NOTE: The OIP will contact you if there are problems with your uploads.  You should check the "Additional Information from OIP" area of the application for confirmation that your documents were received.  Please be aware that the instructor will be unable to consider your application until all materials, including recommendations if applicable, are received.

Faculty Recommendations (If Applicable)

Certain programs require 2 electronic faculty recommendations.  If so, this requirement will be indicated in the program description on the study abroad website.  You will be asked to provide the recommender's names and email addresses.  The faculty member you have named will receive an email request, and you will receive an automated email when your recommendation has been completed.  Please note that it is in your best interest to inform the faculty member that you are requesting a reference from them so that they are not surprised when they get the email request.
Schedule an Interview

Set up an appointment with the study abroad course instructor after you have submitted your application. Unless otherwise noted, you should email the professor directly. 
Accept or Decline the Offer to Study Abroad, Withdrawal Policy and Payments

You will receive an email notice of your approval to participate in the course.  To accept the offer, log into your application and make an online payment of $260 ($60 Application Fee and $200 Program Deposit).  The is payment is fully non-refundable.  Please be sure to have reviewed the full Summer and Winter Program Cancellation, Refund & Withdrawal Policy before you accept the offer and make payment.

You will be registered and billed for the program cost, tuition, and applicable fees shortly after your pay your deposit.  You may then enroll in a payment plan via your FIT student account that will allow you to make payments in regular installments.  Payment deadlines are strictly enforced and are provided the program description.   
Passport, Release Forms, Visas and Pre-departure Orientation

Once you accept the offer and make payment, you will advance to the Pre-Departure stage of the online application.  All study abroad programs require that you hold a passport at the time of travel that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the program's end date, and you will be required to submit an image of the face page. Additionally, you will read and electronically sign a series of online Release Forms related to your responsibilities, health and safety abroad.  Students must submit all in order to be eligible to participate.

Some destinations will require that all participants secure a travel visa.  In other cases, the visa requirement will depend on your citizenship.  In all cases, it is ultimately your responsibility to secure the proper visa.  The OIP will provide advice and supporting documentation.

The course instructor and OIP will hold a mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation about 30 days before departure.   You will be notified of the date as soon as it is scheduled.  Other preparatory meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of the course instructor.
