Academic Research Appointments

Access to the costume, accessories and textile collections is by appointment only. The Museum at FIT is able to accommodate individual academic research appointments to qualified applicants. All appointments are at the discretion of Museum staff. Not all requests can be accommodated due to condition and/or other internal factors.

Qualified applicants consist of all FIT students, doctoral students from other universities, and professional academics doing research for a not-for-profit venture. If you do not fall into one of those categories, we recommend you apply for a design membership.

FIT GRADUATE STUDENTS
FIT graduate students may make an appointment to see objects from the costume, accessory, or textile collections. Please be specific as to your request (for example: designer, description, and year).

FIT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
FIT undergraduate students who are currently enrolled may make an appointment to see objects from the costume or accessory collections only. Appointments are unavailable to see textiles. You must currently be enrolled and have your instructor sign-off on the request form. Forms are available for download here. Please be specific as to your request (for example: designer, description, and year). For appointments to the Color Room, please phone 212 217.4580 or visit in person Room E-332.

GRADUATE STUDENTS
Graduate and doctoral students from other universities may apply to make an appointment to see objects from the costume, accessory, or textile collections. You must currently be enrolled in a recognized graduate program. A formal request must include the topic of your project, the objects requested to be viewed, the name of your institution, and the name of your thesis advisor. Please email your request to museuminfo@fitnyc.edu.

Professional academics doing research for a not-for-profit venture may apply to make an appointment to see objects from the costume, accessory, or textile collection. A formal request must include the topic of your project, the objects requested to be viewed, the name of your institution, and publication details.
