Eligibility and Policies

To be eligible for financial aid, students must be admitted in a degree granting program, be a US Citizen or permanent resident of the US, and continue to meet FITís Satisfactory Academic Progress guidelines.  Only courses toward the degree requirements are counted as enrollment for financial aid purposes.

Full-Time Students (enrolled in 12 or more credits)
To be considered for financial aid, all new and continuing students must be matriculated and enrolled in courses in their degree program. Some financial aid programs are limited to full-time students only.

Part-Time Students (less than 12 credits)
To be considered for financial aid, part-time students must be matriculated and enrolled in courses in their degree  program. Most financial aid programs require enrollment in at least 6 credits in a degree granting program to be eligible.

Graduate Students
To be considered for financial aid, all Graduate students must be enrolled in a degree granting program.

Transfer Students
Transfer students are considered for financial assistance according to the academic level that they are admitted to in a degree program. Students must demonstrate financial need. Transfer students have the same filing deadline as other new students.

Study Abroad
Students matriculated and enrolled in courses in their degree program, participating in a Fashion Institute of Technology Study Abroad Program, through the FIT Office of International Programs, will be eligible for consideration for financial assistance. If you are planning to study abroad, we suggest you contact Financial Aid Services to see what your options for assistance may be.

Visiting Students
Visiting students are not eligible for financial assistance from FIT, and should contact their home school for financial aid.

Continuing and Professional Studies for Non-Degree Students
You must be admitted in a degree program at FIT and in good academic standing to be eligible for financial aid. Students taking non-degree credit courses or certificate program classes are not eligible for financial aid. Some alternative loans may be available based on your credit or with a qualified co-signer for non-degree students. Please contact Financial Aid Services for more information.

International Students
International students are not eligible for financial assistance from FIT. International students may borrow under the Alternative Loan Program. Most lenders will require an eligible (credit worthy) co-signer that is a US citizen.
