RA Job Description


The mission of the Residential Life Office of the Fashion Institute of Technology is to provide a living environment that is conducive to studying and learning, and supports the mission of the College as found in the FIT Catalogue. The residence halls provide a diverse community living experience providing students the opportunity to develop an understanding of others and enabling students to grow personally and intellectually.

Resident Assistants are employees of the Fashion Institute of Technology, staff members of the Residential Life Office and are considered to be representatives of the department.

RAs are in a unique position of responsibility with the FIT community. The staff is hired based on the possession of certain interpersonal skills, a high level of maturity and the ability to make responsible decisions based on good and sound judgment.

RAs report to the Director of Residential Life and his/her professional staff.

RAs must be full-time students with a GPA of 2.5 or better and remain in good academic standing throughout their tenure as a Resident Assistant.

RAs should be available and approachable to the residents in order to respond to roommate conflicts, emergency situations and make appropriate referrals to the Counseling Center, Health Services and our office.

RAs must attend bi-monthly meetings, two in-services per semester, and monthly one-on-one meetings with your Resident Counselor are required. RAs must also attend the first Residence Hall Community Council meeting per semester.

Each RA participates in a rotating duty schedule which includes week nights and weekends. RAs are also required to notify their Building Manager when they are going to be away from campus for 48 hours or more.

RA training begins in May and requires RAs to return to campus early in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

RAs plan a variety of events for their floors, which include social, educational, and community service programs.

RA position is a full-year commitment, and all applicants must be available for the entire academic year in order to be considered for the position.

RAs must assist with RA Selection interviews, and are expected to be available on the given interview dates.
