Robert Savage has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Savage, who was sworn in on December 14, 2009, will serve until June 30, 2015. Amsale Aberra and Chris Casson Madden also were sworn in as new Board of Trustee members.

“Robert Savage is the president and co-founder of Nanette Lepore, NY, the design company Ms. Lepore and he created,” said Edwin Goodman, chairman of the board. “Together, they have built a multi-million dollar business. Mr. Savage brings to the FIT board valuable experience in strategic planning, business development, brand awareness, and project and product management."

Savage and Lepore, who are married, moved to New York from Youngstown, OH, to pursue their dreams—hers to become a fashion designer, his to be a painter. Lepore received a degree in fashion design from FIT and Savage exhibited his artwork in East Village galleries.

Their business began in a penthouse office in the garment center in 1992, also becoming a creative incubator for poets and painters who stargazed on the roof. Today, Nanette Lepore, NY is a multi-tiered enterprise that includes clothing, shoes, fragrance, and ten Nanette Lepore boutiques worldwide.

As head of the business and operations sides of the Lepore brand, Savage has implemented administrative and financial systems, as well as overseen the strategic management and operations of the company. Among his achievements, Savage established international licensing partnerships and laid the foundations for major retail expansion in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and the Middle East.

Savage received a BFA from Youngstown State University and an MA from Goddard College in Vermont. His paintings are in the collections of the Butler Institute of American Art; the Cleveland Museum, Friends of the Museum Collection; the Time Equities Collection; and in private collections.

FIT is governed by its own Board of Trustees, which is charged with the administration of the institution and support of its mission. Board members include Edwin A. Goodman, chair; Elizabeth T. Peek, vice chair; Richard A. Anderman; Jay H. Baker; Robin Burns-McNeill; Judith I. Byrd; William Cope, IV, student trustee; Yaz Hernández; Joan B. Hornig; George S. Kaufman; and Beverly S. Mack.

FIT, a leader in career-oriented education, is a selective college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York (SUNY), with 44 majors leading to the AAS, BFA, BS, MA, and MPS degrees. The college serves more than 10,000 students and offers courses in a wide range of fields.
