"Servicing the needs of the consumer while servicing the needs of the planet"-NG
How would you categorize your initiative?
My initiative is new course FM326 Sustainability in Fashion Merchandising.
In 100 words of fewer, please describe your activity and its relevance to sustainability in the curriculum.
What is sustainability? Pose this question to 25 people and you are likely to end up with 25 answers that may include: green, social responsibility, reuse etc. The intent of this course is to prepare students to thoughtfully answer this question. This course will be an FMM bachelor degree elective and will give each student the unique opportunity to focus on sustainability in the fashion industry as it pertains to their chosen specialization: buying/planning, product development, retail management. Students will identify and address sustainability issues and apply what they learn to build a case for new and innovative solutions and improvements.
Briefly describe your experience implementing your activity.
The course was approved by the college in Spring 2010 and is expected to be offered in Fall 2011.
Based on your experience, do you have any suggestions or advice you might give to other faculty interested in incorporating sustainability into the curriculum?
There is so much focus today on this issue throughout the industry. Sustainability should be incorporated into all programs in some way.
Does your initiative have applicability to other curricular or program areas?
The model I intend to use can be adopted for any class in all disciplines.
Do you have anything else to add?
I am looking forward to offering this class to FMM students.
