Open Enrollment Graduate Course

Spring 2014 (January 27 – May 12)

The following full-semester, 3 credit, graduate level course includes a section that is open to non-degree students. Credits may be applied to a subsequent Master’s of Professional Studies degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management at FIT. 

Corporate Finance for Managers:  Covers how to recognize, read, analyze and interpret financial statements in an international business context. Includes distribution channel and product category financial planning, including new-product introductions, cost of goods, gross profit, etc. Addresses asset management, specifically the management of inventory and accounts receivable and the evaluation of capital expenditures. Includes the impact of information technology on cosmetics and fragrance manufacturers and retailers. Introduces the concept of value creation in conjunction with the merger and acquisition decision-making process. Students will be assigned group and individual projects, including the analysis of two different public companies, as well as the development of a three-year global strategic financial growth plan for a beauty industry public company. *Note: Due to varying student backgrounds and prior exposure to finance, the professor will determine student needs and may revise/refocus course content and learnings accordingly. 

About the Professor: 

Dr. Brooke Carlson “Dr. B” is a full-time member of the FIT graduate school faculty. She has over 20 years of senior executive level management, P+L responsibility, as well as marketing and management experience in the beauty industry, including Parfums de Coeur, Shiseido, Artec, L’Oreal and Conair. Her experience includes strategic and operational marketing, product development, sales, education, operations, research & development, creative, advertising, public relations, integrated communications, as well as magazine editing and publishing. Her results-driven entrepreneurial approach includes strategic and tactical planning for financial growth and profitability, brand image/positioning, channels of distribution, market penetration, new product development and category expansion, as well as research and analysis. Brooke holds a Doctor of Science Degree in Management Systems from the University of New Haven, as well as a Master’s of Business Administration in Marketing from Sacred Heart University.  Dr. B also provides customized training & development programs for the industry in areas such as corporate finance and leadership, strategic marketing consulting, and individual career development, under Beauty Strategies LLC.

Classes meet Monday evenings, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  January 27, 2014 (first class)- May 12, 2014 (last class)

Tuition:  

New York State residents: $1,212*             Out-of-State residents: $2,262
