Online Resources for Non-FIT Students
A. You may search the Library's online catalog, StyleCat and use our Research Guides.
Remote access to all other databases is restricted to current FIT students and employees (valid FIT username and password required for login).
However, some of the online databases we subscribe to, along with additional ones, may be available to you through other channels:
- Other libraries you can use : Public libraries near you may provide online access to a variety of databases.
- NOVEL: New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (Available to New York State residents only):
Databases which come from NOVEL (NY Online Virtual Electronic Library) are available in university and public libraries throughout New York State. If you have a New York State Library Borrower's Card or a New York State Driver License (or NYS DMV Non-Driver Photo ID), you can also access NOVEL resources remotely - SUNYConnect
Some of the databases available at FIT are provided by SUNYConnect. If you are a student or employee at another SUNY (State University of New York) campus, look for these resources on your own campus site
Q. Where can I find specific types of information in the sources mentioned above?
A. Look for these online databases on your local or public library website:
- for WWD and DNR articles:
Look for Academic OneFile , Business Insights: Essentials, Business Source Premier or General OneFile - for Vogue (U.S. edition: articles, editorial, and ads) :
Ask if your local library has access to the Vogue Archive. In New York City, you can use it at any NYPL location.
If you subscribe to Vogue magazine, you can access a limited number of free articles per month from the archive - for New York Times articles:
The website of the New York Times contains most articles and columns since 1851. Articles from 1851-1922 are free, 1923-1986 are on a pay-per-article basis, and those from 1987 and on are free but there is currently a limit of 10 free articles per month;
Look for Academic OneFile, General OneFile, InfoTrac Custom Newspapers or ProQuest Historical Newspapers at your local library (or on its website) for coverage of additional years - for other specific magazines, journal or newspapers:
See if your library's website has something like FIT's E-Journal Portal which will let you look up a specific title and see if the library gives you online access to it through one of its many databases. For example: Full-Text Electronic Journals: Remote access at the New York Public Library.
There are also several free websites with digitized full-text back issues of magazines. Some examples : Google Books, The Magazine Rack
Statistics and studies on the apparel industry? Directories and lists of companies and suppliers in the apparel industry?
Many of the newspaper and magazine article sources mentioned above will have information on these industries.

The NYPL provides a direct link to many Industry Surveys (NYPL card required for access).
