Textile/Surface Design, AAS
Exploring new artistic and technological possibilities for all types of surfaces and fabrics, the textile/surface designer works in apparel fabrics, such as prints, wovens and knits; home fashion design, such as upholstery fabric, wall coverings, drapery, and carpets; and product design, such as china, glassware, flatware, paper products, greeting cards and gift wrap. FIT's Textile/Surface Design curriculum provides students with the core skills and hands-on training to create an impressive portfolio and enter one of the most versatile professions in the fashion and design fields.
PROFESSIONAL FACULTY AND FACILITIES
At FIT, students study and work with a dedicated faculty of design professionals who bring knowledge, experience, and current fashion information to the classroom. Professional studios for painting, printing, weaving, and knitting and state-of-the-art computer labs allow students to work in color and form with paints, dyes, fibers, yarns, silk screens, mixed media, and computer-aided design programs.
INDUSTRY INTERACTION
The Textile/Surface Design Department at FIT has an ongoing relationship with its alumni, Industry Advisory Board, and industry professionals who are all liaisons and mentors to its students. Field trips to professional showrooms and studios provide students with real-life experiences. In addition, FIT students have access to the world's largest collection of costumes and textiles in The Museum at FIT, as well as fashion-related exhibitions and guest lecturers from the fashion industries. They also participate in professional shows, exhibiting their painted, printed, and woven designs at the International Fabric and Fashion Show (IFFE) and Surtex at the New York Jacob Javits Convention Center.
