Tenure, Promotion, and CCE
Tenure and promotion and CCE at FIT are complex processes that involves many steps. This guide offers candidates information on how the process works and the steps you need to take to make the best case for tenure, Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) or promotion. It's always best to work with a mentor within your department to understand what's expected, but there are actions that are similar for faculty across the college. You can find introductory T&P and CCE information for:
- Full-time Faculty
- Part-time Faculty
Tenure and Promotion for Full-time Faculty
FIT has a three-year track to tenure that involves a series of 6 reappointment meetings (see Reappointment, Tenure, and Job Security: Faculty). Faculty hired at the rank of Instructor are eligible for automatic promotion to Assistant Professor after reaching the final step of Instructor. Faculty may be considered for a merit promotion only after meeting the requirements outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (see Promotion). Below you'll find links to applications for tenure and promotion.
» Classroom and Non-classroom Faculty Tenure Applications
It's highly recommended that you review these applications early in the process to understand what needs to be accomplished to successfully submit your dossier. Please review the Faculty Handbook Appendix A (starts on p. 59) to learn more about the requirements for appointment, tenure and promotion across different schools and divisions at FIT.

CCE and Promotion for Part-time Faculty
How the CCE Process Works
All eligible part-time faculty are notified by the Office of Faculty Services regarding the CCE application process once they have completed approximately sixty-five (65) teaching hours. There is a formal application process which requires review and recommendations to the President by the department, school/divisional dean/senior administrator, and the College-wide Tenure and Promotion Committee. The President makes the final decision on all CCE applications.
Those applying for CCE are expected to:
- Complete an application form detailing your qualifications and experience.
- Prepare a candidate's statement and a list of contributions to the department, school and the College.
- Complete an HR release from (available on the CCE application form).
Tips for completing your CCE application:
» Preparing a candidate's statement: Forthcoming!
» Keep a record of your contributions and activities The path to CCE can be long, so it's important to keep a running log of your accomplishments, activities, and contributions. You should hold on to any proof of these contributions such as emails confirming your participation, letters of invitation, or other documents (e.g., meeting minutes, thank you notes, etc.).
Be sure to ask your department's T&P Chair for guidance on the CCE process in your department.
How the Adjunct Promotion Process Works
The Office of Faculty Services provides several documents detailing the promotion process and expectations.
It's recommended that you:
- Review all promotion materials provided by Faculty Services with a particular focus on the application for promotion.
- Review the expectations for promotion outlined in the Faculty Handbook (go to p. 31).
Reviewing these documents well in advance of deciding to go up for promotion will help you decide when and how to begin the promotion application process. These materials also offer you insight into the activities, contributions, and accomplishments you will need to document as part of the process.
