Biography

Dr. De Young specializes in the intersection of art and fashion, teaching courses on modern art and fashion history. Her research and writing interests include nineteenth- and twentieth-century art and literature, visual and material culture, modernism and fashion. She is the editor of Fashion in European Art: Dress and Identity, Politics and the Body, 1775-1925 (I.B. Tauris, 2017) and of the Fashion History Timeline. Her work has been generously supported by grants and fellowships from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Getty, Kress, and Mellon Foundations.

Before coming to FIT, Dr. De Young taught art and fashion history at Harvard, Wellesley, Lesley, and Northwestern University. She has published many essays, notably contributing to the exhibition catalogs for "Impressionism, Fashion & Modernity" (2012-13) and "Tissot: Fashion & Faith" (2019-2020). She lectures widely and has held fellowships at the Met’s Costume Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Northwestern’s Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art.

Her book, The Art of Parisian Chic: Modern Women and Modern Artists in Impressionist Paris, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Visual Arts in Spring 2025.
