Documentation Indicating Need

Financial Need Documentation for FIT Precollege Scholarships

FIT's Precollege Programs requires students seeking need based scholarships to submit an official third-party document verifying their financial need for program eligibility. FIT’s Precollege Programs does not determine eligibility status*.

Verifying Eligibility

Please see the list below for the accepted documents that students can submit to demonstrate their eligibility and financial need criteria:

  • Eligibility for free OR reduced lunch programs (submit official letter on school letterhead).
  • Participation in federal or state assistance programs.
  • ACT/SAT fee waivers.
  • Enrollment in programs that support low-income families (such as TRIO).
  • Residence in federally subsidized housing or homelessness status.
  • Special circumstances such as foster care or orphan status (documentation showing federal or state support).
  • Supporting statement from a school official, college access counselor, financial aid officer, or community leader to demonstrate financial need (even if the student does not have a document of any public assistance).

*Please note that tax forms cannot be accepted as proof of financial need. Students who submit tax forms cannot be considered for a scholarship or a precollege payment plan, please refer to the acceptable documents above.

When families apply to nonpublic schools and want consideration for financial aid, many use the National Association of Independent Schools system which is called School and Student Services. Parents submit a number of financial documents and the NAIS makes a recommendation to schools of financial aid eligibility (called the Parents Financial Statement). The NAIS recommendation/finding may be submitted as a third-party recommendation.
