Capturing History in the Moment

2020 was like no other year in recent history—a raging pandemic coupled with the killing of George Floyd, which brought racism to the forefront—and our alumni, faculty, and student photographers rose to the occasion and documented emotional moments that stirred many of us deeply. Artists like Maiya Imani Wright, Photography ’21, witnessed history unfolding in front of her and captured a protester who embodied anguish, defiance, bravery, and unity in a single photo.

The one teardrop that is falling from their face expresses how the majority of the world is feeling.
