Online Resources for Non-FIT Students

What's available through FIT Library

If you are not a current FIT student, there are some FIT online resources you may use remotely:

Remote access to all other databases and online services is restricted to current FIT students and employees. A valid FIT username and password required for login. However, some of the online databases we subscribe to, along with additional ones, may be available to you through other channels:

What's available through other libraries

  • Other Libraries
Public libraries near you may provide online access to a variety of databases. Many databases may be available remotely (using your library card information to log in), but some may be restricted to on-site use only.
  • NOVEL: New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (New York State residents)
Databases that are part of NOVEL are available in university and public libraries throughout New York State. If you have a New York State Library Borrower's Card or a New York State Driver License (or NYS DMV Non-Driver Photo ID), you can also access NOVEL resources remotely. Additionally, every New Yorker can search NOVEL via geoIP authentication without entering a driver license number as long as they are in New York State.
  • SUNYConnect
Some of the databases available at FIT are provided by SUNYConnect. If you are a student or employee at another State University of New York campus, look for these resources on your own campus website.

Databases

Look for these online databases on your local or public library website:

  • WWD Articles
Look for Academic OneFile , Business Insights: Essentials,  Business Source Premier or General OneFile in addition to direct access to a WWD Online subscription.
  • Vogue (U.S. edition articles, editorial, and ads) or Harper's Bazaar
Ask if your local library has access to the Vogue Archive or Harper's Bazaar Archive. In New York City, you can use Vogue at all NYPL locations and Harper's Bazaar can be used onsite or remotely with a NYPL library card. Vogue's own  browseable archive  page features selected images and articles and may allow access to others (subject to change at any time)
  • New York Times Articles
The website of the New York Times contains most articles and columns since 1851. Articles from 1851-1922 are free, 1923-1986 are on a pay-per-article basis, and those from 1987 and on are free but there is currently a limit of 5 free articles per month. Look for Academic OneFile, General OneFile, InfoTrac Custom Newspapers or ProQuest Historical Newspapers at your local library (or on its website) for coverage of additional years.
  • Other Magazines, Journals, or Newspapers
See if your library's website has something like FIT's Journal Search, which will let you look up a specific title and see if the library gives you online access to it through one of its many databases. For example: Full-Text Electronic Journals: Remote access at the New York Public Library. There are also several free websites with digitized full-text back issues of magazines. Some examples: Google Books, The Magazine Rack.
  • Apparel Industry Statistics, Studies, Directories, and Lists
Many of the newspaper and magazine article sources mentioned above will have information on these industries. See also the FIT Library's Research Guides and New York Public Library's Industry Guide: Apparel, Fashion and Textiles
  • Company Profiles, Articles, and Other Industry Information
Look for Business Insights: Essentials , Business Source Premier, Hoover's databases on your local library's website. Databases such as Mintel  and S&P Net Advantage (for S&P Industry Surveys) may also be available, but often for on-site use only (e.g. at NYPL).  The FIT Library Research Guide Company and Industry Information suggests additional sources of information.
  • Pictures, Clip Art, Inspiration
Image-finding suggestions are available on the FIT Library's Image Searching and Image Collections Research Guide
