Design

The Office of Communications and External Relations (CER) oversees FIT’s brand identity and is responsible for ensuring that all print and digital creative assets align with the institution’s branding guidelines. CER’s Creative Services department assists and supports the college’s internal and external partners to make the design process efficient and cohesive.

Design Projects

All design projects requiring CER involvement must be routed to CER via our Project Request Form. This helps our division schedule and track projects effectively.

  • Projects Designed by CER: Project requestors must provide the image assets needed for the design in high resolution. Other elements (i.e., FIT official logos and design) will be provided by CER. The final approved designs will be delivered in the file formats requested by the client.
  • Projects Designed Outside of CER: Clients must submit the Project Request Form in order for Creative Services to review assets prior to distribution/publication.

Branding

FIT’s branding toolkit is an essential resource, providing thorough information regarding logos, fonts, and colors. Only official FIT logos and lockups are permitted.

Learn More About FIT’s Brand Identity

All FIT design materials are required to use official, approved logos and lockups, which must be applied in a manner consistent with the college’s brand positioning. Logos used in titles must be approved by CER. It is recommended that only one FIT logo be used on a single design piece (unless otherwise needed and upon approval by CER).

Color logos should use FIT’s official or supplemental color palettes. When using multiple logos as a background or decorative accent, they should all be the same color or different hues of the same color. Different-colored logos should not be grouped together except in very specific contexts, such as for Precollege audiences. Logos locked up with type (e.g., the FIT logo next to "State University of New York") should be either all the same color or a colored logo with black or white type.

All designs must use FIT’s offical font, Halyard Text.

Formatting Instructions

All design files must be created in an editable format via Adobe Illustrator or InDesign. This allows CER easy access for any necessary edits. If design assistance is needed, all design files should be packaged with any associated linked files. Vector artwork is also helpful in supporting design functionality. Canva or other flattened artwork and file types are not accepted.

Digital Files (for web use)
Acceptable digital files should be sent in the following file types at 300dpi (with a minimum of 150dpi): JPG, PNG, TIFF and GIF in RGB.

Printed Materials
Print files should be submitted as PDFs at 300dpi and in CMYK. If a bleed is required, the PDF must have bleed (at least ⅛”) and crop marks in the final document.

All images used in design projects should be 300dpi (with a minimum of 150dpi) at the size they will appear in the final document. Do not increase the dpi of the original image file, as it will result in pixelation or reduced image quality.

Please double-check all facts—dates, times, names, and other details—for accuracy before submitting the text for your design. All design submissions will be proofread by CER’s editorial team, but the client is responsible for the accuracy of the information provided.

All designs must adhere to FIT’s accessibility requirements. Text used on colored backgrounds must have enough color contrast so that individuals who have visual impairment are able to read the content. A good resource is a web accessibility checker, which can be used for both web and print.

All web and email designs must meet ADA standards. Images used in emails should include alt text. All text embedded in a design (i.e., email and web banners) must also be included in the body of the email or web page.
