The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa is the largest university in the Western Cape and the only university of technology in the region. CPUT provides a vibrant academic environment with  campuses across the city, allowing students to explore Cape Town's diverse neighborhoods, bustling markets, and vibrant arts scene. The Bellville Campus, which hosts the Clothing and Textile Technology program, is in a residential and student-friendly suburb with an array of entertainment, shopping, eateries, and more.

  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Matriculation in the TDM Associate's degree program
  • Textile Development & Marketing students must obtain academic advisement and approval from the department advisor. Students may participate in their 4th semester.

A full-time semester credit load at CPUT consists of 60 SAQA credits. Only major and related area courses are available but students may take liberal arts or other courses online at FIT at no additional expense as this is an exchange program.

Textile Development & Marketing Course Information:

Students fulfill 4th semester major area, related area, and general elective courses* by taking 37 - 40 SAQA credits within Term 1 and Term 2 of the second year of the Clothing and Textile Technology program. Students must also take at least 3 credits online at FIT while abroad.

*Students must take SC 147 before Semester 4. 

Specific academic calendar dates are not posted until closer to the beginning of term. Typically the CPUT calendar is:

  • Term 1 & 2 (FIT Spring Semester): from late January through late May
  • Term 3 & 4 (FIT Fall Semester): from mid September through mid December

Students are generally expected to arrive the weekend before orientation begins.

Students are responsible for making their own accommodation arrangements for the duration of their stay. Students may apply to live in CPUT residences or search for a privately-rented home with support from CPUT Connect.

Students will be required to apply for a Study Visa for the duration of their stay in South Africa. CPUT will provide supporting documentation and instructions after admission.

Health Insurance

FIT requires all students to be covered in the U.S. and internationally for the duration of their study abroad program. Two types of coverage are required:

1. FIT requires students to be covered abroad for the duration of their program. This policy is mandatory, therefore students cannot waive it.

  • Coverage abroad: UHC Study Abroad Insurance
    *Students will be enrolled and account will be billed before start of program. More detailed information about coverage and claims processes will be provided post-approval.

2. FIT students may use the UHC Study Abroad Insurance above to waive the FIT US Haylor Health Insurance.

Wellness

Students are eligible for student support services offered to all CPUT students.
