Strategic Planning at FIT
For more than 20 years, FIT has embraced strategic planning as a core process to collectively explore the college's areas of focus and to frame a vision of FIT for the future.
FIT's Strategic Plan is a living document that lays out our vision for the future and is a guiding force for the advancement of our college's mission. The plan is intended to change and evolve over time to reflect our community's needs and aspirations in an ever-shifting world. The plan is also a tool against which we can track and measure our progress.
Planning Details
As a community of unconventional minds, FIT is a place where students are educated to be design thinkers, problem solvers, and lifelong learners. We are committed to innovation while leveraging our traditional skills and staying true to our values. We seek dynamic partnerships, cultivate unrestrained ingenuity, and advance uncommon ideas.
To revise our current plan, we used an unconventional process and methodology called "foresight" planning.
Our Planning Council, a body of more than 30 leaders from across FIT, ensured that recommendations reflected our community’s long-term interests. Throughout the plan’s development, more than 500 individuals contributed through committees, roundtable discussions, town-hall meetings, stakeholder interviews, surveys, and alumni outreach. Staff input and involvement has been crucial to our process at every step.
Based on input from all of our college constituencies, the following four goals were identified for FIT moving forward:
- Adopt a culture of flexible and dynamic learning;
- Stake FIT’s claim as an innovation leader and industry collaborator within the areas of art, design, science, and business;
- Partner with the creative industries to further the creation of digital tools, processes, and platforms; and
- Cultivate an inclusive and collaborative community of lifelong learners where access,
connection, curiosity, risk-taking, and respect are valued.

The Planning Cycle
The planning process was divided into four phases. We are currently in Phase 4: Implementation and Assessment.
Phase 1: Launch and Preliminary Assessment
Phase 2: Goal Development
Phase 3: Plan Development
Phase 4: Implementation and Assessment
WE ARE HERE
FIT’s planning cycle is typically revised every five years, but the current planning cycle covers closer to eight years due to the significant disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our current strategic plan was adopted at the April 2023 Board of Trustees meeting, and we are now in the implementation and assessment phase of the plan.
To lead our implementation efforts, Dr. Brown established the Strategic Plan Implementation Committee. This committee is charged with crafting roadmapap to achieve our four strategic-plan goals.
What's next?
Implementation Committee subgroups are currently working on and reviewing proposals to achieve our four key goals, such as our primary focus on adopting a culture of flexible and dynamic learning and being known as an innovation leader in art, design, science, and business. As these proposals move forward, information will be shared with the larger FIT community.
FIT's Strategic Plan Evolution
FIT has been actively engaged with strategic planning since 1998. We are currently implementing the tasks from our plan’s fourth iteration.
