This purpose of this course is to illuminate various facets of sociological factors from fashion historical lenses from inside the corporate structure to the consumer. The course aims to break down common buzzwords in fashion regarding race, identity, and politics, and how their true effects throughout the fashion system. As mentioned, fashion history is the theoretical approach of the course, opening opportunities for students to explore resources to expand their practice and connections within the workplace and with audiences.
This course is for fashion industry professionals working in the business sector, particularly within the fields of marketing, design, and administration. Through a historical lens, this course examines many facets of the sociological factors impacting the fashion industry from inside the corporate structure to the consumer. The course aims to break down common buzzwords in fashion regarding race, identity, and politics. Fashion history is the theoretical approach to the course, opening opportunities for students to explore resources to expand their practice and connections within the workplace and with audiences.
This course is taught by Darnell-Jamal Lisby, who is the Assistant Curator of Fashion for the Cleveland Museum of Art. He also participates in various fashion curatorial efforts outside the CMA, including working with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to develop a metaverse exhibition celebrating their 60th Anniversary. In addition to writing for various mainstream and academic publications and teaching, he was a part of fashion curatorial teams and efforts at multiple institutions, including the MET, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the Museum at FIT, and more.
